28. More Questions?

I know we have learned a lot about how the nonprofit sector got started and came about. But, how does a person actually start their own non-profit? Do they need to have more than one person with there in order to start the organization? We may have touched on these questions, but I am just interested in knowing what the first steps to starting your own would be. I guess you would have to do research and see if there was already a non-profit organization out there that covers what you wanted to be expressed, but if you surpass this than how do you actually start one of your own?

  1. My aunt started a nonprofit in southern VA for battered and abused women. The Odessa house, which is named after my great great grandmother. The house gives women a place to try to get back on their feet and also a place to feel safe. I never asked her how she started it but now I am very interested in hearing what she had to go through. I do know that It took at large toll on her with the time she had to put in to it and the pressure she was under from it.

  2. I have the same questions you do about the non-profit sector and how does a person actually start one. One of my suggestions were to do the next EL project, in class, as a start-up of a non-profit. One of the suggestions that were made before but never went anywhere with it. Also, I am expressing an interest in actually starting a charity foundation of some sort. Like the MS society walk/ bike ride or the Susan B. Komen race for the cure. Have any idea?
